Border Collie Breeder
Detania - Border Collie Breeder
  • ShieldaigThe Love of my Border Collies

  • The Health of my Border Collies

  • Just how robust are Border Collies we may ask?  And how much do they suffer- the soundest breed around I read?

  • Where do we go for advice and support?

  • X-Rayed at 12months old may help Hip Dysplacia (by introducing Cosequin, Glucosamine) which helps protect their joints. Why are we not advised to have these x-rays?

ESTABLISHED BREEDER

My Border Collie had just died and I found if difficult to be without another Collie, as we now lived in Spain it was difficult to find a good Breeder of Border Collies, with good pedigrees, hip scored and eye tested, so my husband and I searched for a established breeder and went over to the U.K. We had found out about Detania based in Saxmundum, breeders of Border Collies. Mrs Gillespie, the owner, apart from being a breeder she was a judge at Crufts (we were excited) things were looking good. Sadly when we returned to Spain we had a call from Detania when one of our Border Collies died at just 8 weeks old. I was devastated but kindly Mrs Gillespie offered us another, this was Megan.

THREE YEARS LATER...

MeganMEGAN: Was diagnosed with Hip dysplasia early in 2008 which is very painful and terribly debilitating disease. Megan has just undergone a hip replacement, and will need another as soon as she is fit enough. She has also a weakness of the spine with problems in the lower lumbar area and is now in the process of a difficult recovery (I have her in a cage next to my bed) trying to keep a Border Collie quiet is a harrowing experience for the owner as well as the dog.Megan

SUFFERING: A top Vetinary Surgeon came over from Sweden and joined the Spanish team, both surgeons felt Megan had a very severe case of dysplasia and has been suffering for a very long time.

BONNIE: Became very ill with Pneumonia (after extensive test she was diagnosed with Laryngeal Paralysis) this means that when she needs a deep breath, she doesn´t get one. This can create tremendous anxiety (just imagine attempting to take a deep breath and finding that you simply cannot). Water or food may go into her lungs when she eats (and she would then develop Pneumonia) I feel surgery at this point is too complex  to risk.

BonnyCOST

The cost of treating my Border Collies is phenomenal. Megan's surgery was 3000 euros and a further 3000 euros in a years time.  In addition there is also the post operative costs of physiotherapy and hydrotherapy (200 euros for the first course lasting 2 weeks) and many more thereafter. Their must be many Border Collies who have not been as lucky as Megan and have had to suffer greatly. Why?

Bonnie´s vetinary fees were also a lot of money with extensive testing that was necessary: X-rays, blood tests, ultra sound diagnosis and heart tests.

BonnyHow can I possible be that unlucky that 3 of my Border Collies have serious defects?

Megans parents were: Mobella Land O' Hope'n'Glory for Detania & Detania Blue Bonnet.

Grandparents: Bluella Landau for Westirene, Mobella Winter Glory, Detania Brett of Woodside & Detania Cider with Rosie.

Bonnies parents were: Detania Jupiter and Sian of Detania.

Grandparents: Detania Hermes & Detania I-IS-A-Belle, Rock & Shaugh.

I understand from the Kennel Club that Mrs. Gillespie is on the list of accredited breeders which was developd by the Kennel Club approximately  two years ago.  I have written to Mrs. Gillespie and after some time she replied to me.  Both letters are shown below.  Please click on them to see their contents.

Our first letter to Mrs. Gillespie and the reply 4 months later Reply from Mrs. Gillespie and finally Our reply to her letter.

Lets hear from anyone who has been as UNLUCKY (as they call it) as us.

Regards.
Denise.
